Welcome to the First Universalist Church of Providence, Rhode Island!

The First Universalist Church proclaims universal salvation through the victory of Jesus Christ over all that separates us from God. We offer an ecumenically-minded assembly home and church community open to everyone, helping to build the Body of Christ through companionship and participation. While the city of Providence is our location, it is God's Providence that is our hope.
We are a Christian, Trinitarian organization—organizing members of the Providence Intown Churches Association (located in our building). We are also charter members of the Council of Christian Churches Within The Unitarian Universalist Association, founding members of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches and of the Universalist Church of Rhode Island.
Our ecumenical Church School curriculum, The Whole People of God, is dedicated to uniting children and adults together around God's Word and to learn of his purpose.
    Please join us.

New Members

We recognize the Christian Baptism of any denomination, administered at any age, as basis for membership in our congregation. New members are received into this local fellowship and Communion by reaffirming their Baptism and their Christian faith.

A sanctuary from the world...
in the world...

for all God's people.

Body of Christ

St. Paul speaks to us about the Body of Christ, a term that symbolizes the aggregate of all those who believe in the saving power of Christ Jesus. It consists of the entire community of believing Christians, of whatever background. It speaks of the entire universe when it is finally liberated from the bonds of separation from God.
This is an important concept. We are part of the Body of Christ. We strive to proclaim that in Christ, God will restore the whole family of humanity to the grace and happiness which the name of our denomination, founded in 1785, Universalist, signifies. This is our collective calling, a holy and satisfying task, in which we invite all people to participate.

Trinitarian

Trinitarian refers to the Holy Trinity. Our historic Universalist tradition, continued locally here, maintains its Trinitarian understanding of God (while respecting that of the Unitarian churches with which we formed a decentralized national Association in 1961).
It is central to our understanding of the Gospel that God, Who created humanity in His image, is a communion of 3 Persons—a divine relationship between the Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit, which, by its nature, seeks out, creates and redeems the persons which we are as human beings. The Triune God loves and saves us, not by accident, but by the very nature of all that is. And it takes a Savior who really is the Son of God to overcome the world and conquer all that separates us from God. This central wonder and glory of the Christian faith. This is sometimes called a Mystery of Faith, one which God has chosen to reveal to humanity in Christ Jesus, the Word made Flesh.

Mystery of Faith
That the one God is expressed in three divine persons is considered a mystery of faith by the Christian community. It is based in scripture and tradition and testifies to the Communion of Persons Who are the One God.
When dealing with the Infinite, we accept that our minds are, by nature, limited in understanding such mysteries. We remember that Faith (according to one classic definition) is the sure and certain knowledge of God's benevolence towards us, revealed in Jesus Christ and sealed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
