The First Universalist Church in Providence

Welcome to The First Universalist Church
in Providence

A warm, traditional congregation of believers in the heart of historic Downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Whether you are visiting the area, looking for a church home, or simply interested in what we do, we invite you to join us for Sunday worship (weekly at 10:30 a.m.) and our special seasonal services throughout the year.

Founded in 1821, our Universalist Christian Church believes in the worldwide unity of the body of Christ, getting its name from proclaiming the universal salvation of all people in Jesus Christ. We welcome everyone to our services, and exist to build up the local body of believers. We desire to share our faith, firmly rooted in the Gospel of Christ, through worship, study, and fellowship together, in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

When visiting our church, you’ll discover a beautiful, traditional, Protestant service held in one of the best-preserved examples of mid-Victorian design in the New England area. Our building boasts cathedral architecture, some of America’s oldest U.S.–made stained glass windows, and a prayerbook liturgy dating from the Civil War era. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, First Universalist is a must-see stop for visitors and community members alike. We’re located on 250 Washington Street, at Greene Street, across from the Providence Public Library, and a block from Trinity Repertory Theater and the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

We offer something for the entire family, including an ecumenical Sunday School and a place for folks of all backgrounds (churched and not). We welcome each of you to explore the rest of this site— getting to know us a little better, joining us for worship this Sunday, and allowing us to get to know our visitors. We look forward to seeing you!
